FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Berthollet was a prominent French chemist who, along with Antoine Lavoiser, helped devise a chemical nomenclature that served as the basis of the modern system of naming chemical compounds. His work, Researches into the Laws of Chemical Affinity, was an attempt to improve upon the determinations of chemical affinities by recognizing the influence of factors such as volatility, solubility, and chemical mass.
